This exceptional Victorian bracelet is beautifully elaborate from every angle, combining rich 18K yellow gold, vivid turquoise, hand-engraved details, and an unusual adjustable bangle construction.
The centerpiece is a sculptural arrangement of substantial interlocking gold links, creating an almost knotted appearance across the front of the bracelet. Woven through the center is an engraved gold panel set with a graduated row of turquoise cabochons, while a larger oval turquoise cabochon rests on either side. The turquoise brings a wonderful flash of blue against the warmth and depth of the antique gold.
The workmanship continues well beyond the center. Broad shoulders are covered in finely engraved scrolling foliate decoration before tapering into the rounded bangle. Even the smaller gold panels surrounding the turquoise are engraved, giving the bracelet remarkable detail when viewed closely.
One of our favorite features is its construction. Rather than a conventional fixed bangle, the bracelet has overlapping ends that allow it to adjust from approximately 6 to 6.5 inches. The bracelet is semi-hollow, a construction frequently used in antique jewelry to create impressive dimension and volume without the extraordinary weight a completely solid piece of this scale would require. Even so, at 17.92 grams of 18K gold, it has a substantial presence on the wrist.
The combination of the oversized interlocking links, bright turquoise, intricate engraving, and beautifully engineered adjustable form makes this an especially distinctive piece of Victorian jewelry. It has the ornament and craftsmanship of the period while still feeling remarkably wearable today.
